Toyota to launch new Corolla altis in India

NEW COROLLA ALTIS

Finally your wait for the new corolla will be soon over. Toyota has been delaying the new generation Corolla in India for sometime and invited rant reviews from Indian customers. The tenth generation Corolla made its international debut in October 2006. However the story will be soon over, Toyota will launch the car in September.

To be christened as Corolla altis in India the car will spearhead the second beginning for Toyota in India. The new corolla altis is a dramatic departure from the succession of dull, anonymously styled models as it borrows styling cues from the Camry.

The 2008 corolla Altis will be 10mm longer, 60mm wider and 20mm lower than the current model. The wheelbase will be unchanged at 2,600mm, but with the wider track and lower center of gravity the handling should be noticeably improved. The extra width should also improve cabin space, and although slightly lower, the Altis is still 50mm taller than the Civic. The new corolla altis will be powered by a 1.8L engine developing around 140bhp. This engine is a carryover from the existing corolla but will be tweaked for better performance. A four speed auto box will be offered as optional. However the new coroll altis won’t come with diesel engine atleast initially.

The bookings for the new corolla altis has started and you can book the car by paying Rs2 lakhs in chennai. The new corolla altis will be available for display in showrooms from third week of August and the official launch would happen sometime in september. The new corolla altis will be priced around Rs13 lakh.

Suzuki to Launch Lanza 150cc VERY SOON

SUZUKI'S LANZA 150CC

Mr. Atul Gupta, the vice-president of sales and marketing of Suzuki revealed the fact that the company will launch a 150cc premium bike within March 2009. The new bike will be named Lanza and it is estimated to have atleast a power of 15bhp. Lanza will compete with other high end bikes in India and hence will be equipped with 6 speed gear box and digital consoles.

Just like Yamaha cloned the design of R1 and introduced as R15… there is a good chance that Suzuki will clone it’s higher end model which is successful in foreign countries. Here is a picture of Suzuki higher end Lanza R G5x.

HONDA LAUNCHING NEW BIKES WITH IN INDIA

Honda CBR 150R

Yamaha and Suzuki have had more exposure than any other bike company in India because of the launch of FZ16and R15 from Yamaha and GS150R from Suzuki. But Hero Honda and Honda are busy stickering up their bikes. New CBZXTREME, New Passion Pro are both just sticker upgrades and has no change in the engine or performance, which seems to be quite lame. And many Indian bikers got disappointed with the launch of HONDA UNICORN Grand Prix edition, another sticker work, which is not so good looking and gives an idea that Honda is just trying to catch up in the two-wheeler market.

Will Honda susprise us in 2009? I am also a fan of Honda cars and I feel that Honda is not intimidated by the bike launches from Yamaha and Suzuki. The people at Hondas may have something bigger in store for us and are waiting for the right time, I guess. Now, Introduce yourself to Honda CBR 150R!

The CBR series of bikes from Honda is more than just a famous brand name. Now with the launch of YAMAHA R15, India is in need for competing sports bikes with latest technology. This may lead to Honda bringing the CBR 150R to India. This bike is far more technologically advanced than the R15 and is a real sports bike, not a sporty looking bike! Anyway this is not a news, but just a speculation. Stay tuned for more bike news.

Honda launches new 125 cc sports bike

Aiming to sell 10 lakh units in the current fiscal, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India on Monday launched its new 125 cc sports bike in the country priced between Rs 47,070 and Rs 51,655 (Ex-Showroom, Delhi).

"We plan to achieve a sale of one million units in the current fiscal and the launch of this new bike will help us in materialising this target," HMSI Pvt Ltd Divisional Head (Sales and Marketing) N K Rattan said in New Delhi.

"We plan to sell 80,000 units of the new bike, CBF Stunner, in this fiscal," he added.
The company had recorded sales of 9.07 lakh units in the previous fiscal.

In the current fiscal year, the firm targets to sell three lakh motorcycles and seven lakh scooters, he added.

HMSI had earlier announced to set up a new manufacturing facility, but it has now decided to go slow on this front.

"Currently, our production capacity is of 1.2 million units, but it can be stretched up to 1.35 million units. So we can avail of this facility for the next 2-3 years. As of now, we do not have any plans to set up a new facility," he said.

Besides the new bike, the company plans to launch two new models this year.

"There will be one or two more new launches in this financial year. We also expect our bikes above the 800 cc category to launch in FY'09, which will be priced above Rs 10 lakh," Rattan said.

The company would import these high performance bikes as a completely built unit, he added.

HERO HONDA TO LAUNCH TWO NEW MODELS

NEW DELHI: India's biggest motorcycle maker, Hero Honda Motors, will launch two new models in the new fiscal year that begins in April to boost its sales growth in the world's second-largest motorcycle market, an official said on Thursday.

"One of them will be launched in October-November and another one in February-March 2005. Both of them will have ENGINE capacity greater than 100 cc," Ravi Sud, Vice-President, Finance, told.

Over 70 per cent of the motorcycles sold in India, a market of 4.3 million units a year, have engine capacity of 100 cc. New model launches are keys to driving sales in the country.

Hero Honda, in which India's Munjal family and Japan's Honda Motor Co each hold 26 per cent stakes, makes nine models and has a dominating 48.5 per cent share of the INDIAN MORORCYLCES MArket, the world's biggest after China.

The automaker, which mainly competes with second-ranked Bajaj Auto and third-placed TVS Motor, introduced five new models and variants in the current fiscal year to March 31. That helped propel sales 20.2 per cent in April-February to 1,877,976 BIKES, faster than industry growth of 14.1 per cent.

Sud expected the combined industry sales of two-wheelers, including scooters, motorcycles and MOPEDS, to rise by 11-12 per cent in 2004-05 and motorcycle industry sales to grow a little faster, by about 12 per cent.

He said the company had also boosted the combined production capacity at its two plants to 2.7 million units a year.

LEARN DRIVING

Learning to Drive Virtually on Simulators

Learning to drive is taking a whole new twist in India thanks to new age driving simulators which are changing the way we learn how to drive. A simulator is a stationary car cabin with all controls (steering, gear, clutch, brake etc) with multiple screens in front to resemble a real life driving situation via 3d imagery. The simulator's brain is a computer and software which mimics real life road situations and responds according to the drivers inputs. One can also choose from variety of climatic conditions, traffic situations and different roads (highways or city roads) to drive on, which will be displayed on the screens.

Such simulators are a boon for hesistant drivers who are overwhelmed with the idea of learning to drive on our bustling streets. Also simulators can expose the driver to tense situations and teach the driver how to tackle them effectively, situations which can be life threatning on the road. A simulator gives a confidence boost to the driver before he/she hits the road for training in an actual car.

Driving schools such as Maruti Driving School and the Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) have introduced car simulators which are being used for preliminary training. Once the driver has learnt the basics on the simulators he/she is put in a real car to practise on the road and acquire a permanent licence. Obviously, no one can attain a permanent license without passing the on road RTO tests, but simulators are making better and safer drivers.

New Husqvarna bikes for 2009

Husqvarna, the famous motard and off-roading brand recently introduced two new Enduro models for 2009

The four-stroke TE310 is based on the TE250 while incorporating various modifications. The same 250cc engine has been bored to 310cc for added power. Compared to the smaller TE250, the 310 uses a 1kg lighter frame with new wavy disc brakes. The bike also has a new exhaust system and the rear suspension has renewed settings to improve rider comfort. On the looks front, it has been styled more aggressively as reflected by new wheels and an electronic instrument panel which is compact and easy to read.

The TC450 gets minor upgrades for 2009

The bigger Husqvarna TC 450 for 2009 is slightly modified from last year’s model and like the TE310 features a lighter frame and wavy disc brakes. It loses one kilo as compared to the model it replaces. It also has a titanium exhaust that helps engine responsiveness at low revs.

The bikes were revealed in a preview at the Barcelona show, and Husqvarna also presented the two machines at the Italian Motocross Grand Prix at Mantova on May 17 and 18. Both the TE 310 and TC450 have been tested and developed by Andrea Bartolini and current MX3 riders Thomas Allier and Christophe Martin. Prices are yet to be announced.

iPhone 3G Launch Dismal Failure in India (a small nation with 1.2 billion people)

Apple launched iPhone in India, a country with only 1.2 billion people and overall not considered rich like their counterparts in USA. In USA Apple launched iPhone for $199 only. Steve Jobbs also promised that it will be similalry priced across all markets. So how did they target a market of 1.2 B with a very high mobile pernetration and nowhere as rich as USA? By pricing iPhone 3G at 4 times the US price at Rs. 31, 000 only (and lockdown for a year to the service provider) and without 3G. Imagine how the market reacted…

"Only a few buyers turned up at midnight launches done by both Airtel and Vodafone across eight cities in India," The Economic Times reported.

After their initial launch with much fanfare, only few handsets were sold throughout the country. After about 13 days of launching only few thousands have been sold by some estimates. Why is Apple's iPhone 3G been a dismal failure in India?

Price - Apple iPhone 3G is way overpriced

iPhone 3G is priced over 4 times in India. While India has a good market for high end phones, even from relatively unknown mobile phone vendors like Asus, iPhone 3G is unique in that it has been overpriced so much that its features are not attractive compared to its competitors.

Apple & its allies Vodaphone & Airtel have turned away lots of customers with their insanely high price point. Most potential buyers are waiting for prices to drop drastically and some to ~199$ levels.

iPhone 3G is under-featured

Imagine a Rs 30, 000 without a front facing video camera and lack of video conferencing (Gizmodo prefers to use a mirror)! In India the mobile market is quite mature and the high end mobile are very feature-rich and comparable to anywhere in the world. However unlike USA, Apple doesn't have any brand value in India. People don't go gaga over anything Apple creates. So Apple has to compete in terms of equivalent features for the price. Apple fails there. I have unconfirmed reports that iPhone 3G internet speed isn't very good. The funniest thing is that iPhone 3G has been launched without having any 3G service provider. It will run over GSM only. The high-income bracket is hesitant to buy the iPhone simply because of negative perceptions about its quality and features but not its price. Apple hasn't impressed the mobile-crazy crowd in India. Even the tech magazines and tech shows have rated iPhone 3G poorly.

IBM INTRODUCES NEW VIRTUAL DESKTOP PC ARCHITECTURE

With the IBM Virtual Client Solution, users are free to move about their physical surroundings and maintain secure access to their PC desktop from any client device at any time.

IBM came out with their new virtual desktop PC architecture on Thursday. IBM on Thursday said it is working with partners Virtual Bridges and Canonical to develop a Ubuntu Linux-based virtual PC solution. According to them, this whole package will include

1) Virtual Bridges' Virtual Enterprise Remote Desktop Environment (VERDE)
2) Ubuntu Linux desktop operating system
3) IBM's Open Collaboration Client Solution software, based on IBM Lotus Symphony
4) IBM Lotus Notes and Lotus applications.

The solution looks promising indeed but the biggest potential problem is the fact that it is a bundle, said George Loridas, South Central territory manager for Ryjac Computer Solutions. You never know if one component of the system changes, then you may have to change the whole system.

An even bigger problem is the ignorance of mass in this issue. Virtual PCs are so new, you do not know how severely its gonna hit the market. Though its not directed towards all, one of the big advantages to moving to the new solution is that there is no need to upgrade customers' PCs for new Microsoft operating systems.

IBM INTRODUCES NEW SOFTWARE AND SERVICES FOR MOBILES

IBM today announced new software and services for mobile devices that closely mimic desktop features formerly found only on the PC. The new software & services can help individuals make better business decisions faster, while connecting friends, work colleagues and teams above and beyond PC era.

The new software includes products with business intelligence, collaboration, social networking and business performance capabilities. In addition, IBM is providing developers with new tools to make existing software applications run on mobile devices. IBM’s software is built on open standards so it can be used with most mobile platforms including BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Mobile, and Symbian.

New Mobile Consulting ServicesIBM is announcing new business consulting services to help companies manage a mobile work environment. Called Mobility@Work, the consulting and implementation services can help employers increase productivity by as much as 30 percent and cut real estate costs, the second largest corporate expense after salaries and benefits.

Using a combination of the new software and services, employees and executives on the go can have an instant view of how their business is performing, either at a company-wide or a very detailed business process level, depending on the person’s role within the enterprise. Using collaboration software, that information can then be shared across a team and action can be taken, all using a mobile device.

Combined with business event processing software from IBM, companies can identify patterns and establish connections between events and then initiate a trigger when a trend emerges. A business event represents a slice of time, down to the millisecond, and could be something like a stock trade or online purchase. The role of event processing is becoming increasingly important because it enables companies of all sizes and industries to analyze and respond to minute market changes based on information being collected from millions of mobile devices.

Using any type of device like an iPhone, BlackBerry or laptop, users can reach into the cloud for resources as they need them. Cloud computing allows users and companies to pay for and use the services and storage that they need, when they need them and, as wireless broadband connection options grow, where they need them.

The new IBM mobile software products include:IBM Rational Business Developer is software that helps developers create Web 2.0-style applications in IBM’s newest business language, Enterprise Generation Language (EGL), to run on a mainframe or mobile devices. EGL makes it easy for developers to build new applications, like mobile web applications, or extend existing applications without having to be familiar with the underlying middleware or platform technologies.

IBM Rational Host Access Transformation Services (HATS) is software that helps developers transform green screen applications into a mobile user interface and web services allowing end-users to access mainframe applications from a mobile phone, PDA or other remote mobile device in a highly secure manner. For example, an insurance adjuster can access claim details while on the road when, previously this data resided in a terminal-based application.

WebSphere Business Monitor is business activity monitoring software that allows users to measure business process performance, monitor ongoing and completed processes, and report on business operations. It provides real-time information on customizable business dashboards to identify business problems, correct exceptions and change processes to increase business competitiveness by improving process efficiencies. Business users can personalize their role-based, secure dashboards to view the key performance indicators, metrics and report that are important to their role – without involving IT. They can receive immediate notification alerts and take appropriate actions. Detailed reports are provided for more in-depth analysis. The ability to closely monitor key business performance metrics enables people to continuously drive improvement. WebSphere Business Monitor is now available on BlackBerry devices and will be available on iPhone in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Tivoli provides the Service Management software that is a key foundational element for managing the delivery of mobile based business services. This includes the full range of capabilities that allow for the management of the entire mobile network backbone, including the mobile network, mobile devices, as well as mobile based services. A combination of Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus, Tivoli Monitoring, Tivoli Network Assure and Tivoli Storage Manager with the capabilities of Cognos Go! Mobile, for example, provides the ability to create a mobile "executive dashboard" reporting on key management data about a mobile based service, providing responsible executives the data and backbone alerts, where and when they want them and on any device they want to receive them on.

Providing this level of information on a mobile device, combined with external sources like weather, maps and stock market data is made possible through the use of IBM’s mashup technologies and service oriented architecture (SOA). Using SOA and open standards, businesses can obtain this simple, enterprise-wide view since systems, business processes and people are linked together.

According to a recent report from IBM’s Institute for Business Value, the number of mobile Internet users worldwide is projected to approach 1 billion, a 191 percent increase from 2006 and a compound annual growth rate of 24 percent. 67 percent of all workers today use mobile and wireless computing. You can expect more review of mobile software and srevices in this blog in the coming days. Stay tuned, mobile is the next dotcom like boom market in the offing. Are you ready?

NEW IPHONE SOFTWARES AND RELEASES

TALKING PHRASEBOOK

Coolgorilla Launches New Talking PhrasebookMost Popular iPhone Phrasebook has Over 200 New Words and Phrases Added
New York - Coolgorilla, the world’s most primitive software developers who have been at the forefront of the evolution of mobile translation products, have launched a new talking phrasebook for all iPhone and iPod Touch users. The phrasebook is available in seven different language versions, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japenese, Portuguese and Spanish, and can be downloaded by visiting Apple’s App Store.

Searching through a printed phrasebook is now a thing of the past as Coolgorilla’s intuitive application allows consumers to search quickly and simply for a phrase in English and let their iPhone speak the phrase in the foreign language. A real, native accent is used and the text translation is also provided on the screen. Each phrasebook contains over 500 sound files covering all elements of the holiday experience including Eating, Travel and even Flirting. The talking phrasebooks also have a new search functionality included. Users can now quickly and easily search for all phrases with, for example, ‘taxi’.

Mobile phones are globally recognised as an excellent way to communicate and people everywhere are used to interacting with an iPhone. Coolgorilla’s talking phrasebooks allow your iPhone to communicate on your behalf, directly with the locals you meet on holiday.

“We’ve worked really hard to improve the phrasebooks yet again,” said Roy Forsdick, MD of Coolgorilla. “Since we started developing the talking phrasebooks in 2005 we’ve spoken to hundreds of travellers to find out what phrases they would like to see included. With over 40 different categories in this version, we’re confident that they will enrich people’s holiday experience.

”At only $0.99 to download from Apple’s App Store, the new phrasebooks from Coolgorilla offer excellent value for money. Cheaper, and much more convenient, than printed versions, Coolgorilla’s phrasebooks are also better value than other downloadable applications. Some brands charge up to ten times the price to download their application, while others require you to connect to the internet to receive your translation, often resulting in poor translations and very expensive phone bills when used abroad.

Using Coolgorilla’s new talking phrasebooks holidaymakers will be able enjoy their break to the full. An increased list of activity based words and phrases means you can now ask to go skydiving in Greece, or on a helicopter ride in Portugal. The phrasebooks also include localised options such as playing boules in France, or visiting a traditional German beer hall.

iDialUDrive - Hands Free Cell Phone Dialer App for the iPhone Now Available on iTunes

MISSOULA, Mont., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- iCloseBy.com has announced the release of iDialUDrive(TM), a new App for the Apple iPhone(TM) which is used to automatically dial, hands free, anyone on a list of contacts. This application is a safe, legal way to use your iPhone cell phone while driving.

Using the iPhone's built-in Contact Manager, iDialUDrive (I Dial - You Drive) lets iPhone owners easily create custom lists of people to call. Microsoft's latest robotics release

MICROSOFT LATEST ROBOTICS RELEASE

Microsoft released the latest revision of its robotics development software platform at the RoboDevelopment Conference and Expo in Santa Clara, Calif., on Monday.
Robotics Developer Studio 2008 is intended to satisfy the gamut of roboticists from hobbyists looking to program things like the iRobot Create to professionals developing commercial robots for sale.
As such, there are three versions of the software: Express, Standard, and Academic.
The Standard version for professionals will be available for $499.95, with the Express hobbyist version offered as a free download. (Pricing for an Academic license was not disclosed.)
This latest version of the software platform offers increased runtime performance, including faster load times and increased throughput.
The platform's Visual Programming Language tool, Microsoft's drag-and-drop authoring tool, has been updated for greater ease of use when working with distributed applications, according to Microsoft.
Simulations can now be recorded and played back using the Visual Simulation Environment tool to see what things might go wrong before testing applications out on hardware.
The new version also includes support for Visual Studio 2005 and 2008.
Another difference is in the licensing restriction. Pros and academics who buy the license for the 2008 version will be allowed to distribute an unlimited number of copies of the Concurrency and Coordination Runtime and Decentralized Software Services runtime components, whereas the previous version restricted licensees to 200 copies.
Redmond has been increasing efforts in robotics, announcing earlier this year that it will lead several initiatives to promote the robotics industry as a whole, as well as double its investment in its Robotics Group.
The platform has been supported by a long list of robotics hardware manufacturers and component suppliers, including favorites like iRobot and Lego.
According to Microsoft's own statistics, over 250,000 copies of its Windows-based development platform have been downloaded since its first version release.

WINDOWS DESKTOP SEARCH 3.01

Windows Desktop Search 3.01 is an updated component of Windows that enables instant search on your computer.

Windows Desktop Search (WDS) 3.01 is a minor update to Windows Desktop Search 3.0 that adds: support for indexing UNC files, additional support for enterprise deployment, and stability improvements. WDS 3.01 installs on Windows XP and Window Server 2003, but is not needed for Windows Vista since the WDS component is already included in Vista. Windows Desktop Search 3.01 helps you to find, preview, and use your documents, e-mail, music, photos, and other items. The search engine in Windows Desktop Search 3.01 is a Windows service that is also used by applications such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007 to index application content and deliver instant results when searching within that application.

If you choose to install and use Windows Desktop Search, you can search for e-mail, documents and other files located on your computer. No information about the files on your computer will be sent to Microsoft as part of this process. Instead, Windows Desktop Search will index the content of your computer and store the index file on your computer. You can customize Windows Desktop Search to index only specified folders on your computer. Windows Desktop search will not store copies of e-mail or documents after they are deleted.

Note WDS 3.01 can be installed as a new install or as an upgrade from 02.05.xxxx, 02.06.xxxx or 03.00.0000. On an upgrade from 03.00.0000, you will not need to rebuild your index.

This download package can be installed via update.exe or MSI. Both of these include the ADM File and Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks.

After you install these items, you may have to restart your computer.

WINDOWS LIVE MAIL 2008

Windows Live Mail is the free consumer client Microsoft will invest in moving forward. It is a superset of existing free clients and will replace Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail desktop beta. While it used to be a paid feature, Hotmail customers can now access their account for free in Outlook 2003 and Windows Live Mail.

There are a number of changes that we made to the sign-in experience to try to make this smoother and easier to get you started in Windows Live Mail.

1) Auto-configuration of your accounts. We now recognize a number of different account types and will attempt to auto-configure yours so you don’t have to remember what your incoming and outgoing server information is.

2) Windows Live ID (formerly known as Passport¦) signin not required. You can simply use WL Mail with your POP or IMAP email accounts. We do, however, recommend signing in with a Windows Live ID when using WL Mail to get the most out of the product as some features (like Photo E-mail and Contacts sync) work best when you are signed in.

3) Migration of your old accounts. If you’re using a WL ID, we will migrate that account over automatically this is not new. But, now we will also check to see what accounts you’ve used on Windows Mail or Outlook Express as well. If you’ve used any accounts on those apps in the past, we will also attempt to automatically migrate them over as well.

Here are some of the new features youâ’ll find in new Windows Live Mail :
1) Sleek new frame - The frame of the window is much slimmer and has a sleek new design. Also, if you are using Vista we are now Aero-enabled!

2) Improved shortcut buttons - The shortcut buttons now run along the bottom of the folder pane for easier navigation. We think our Outlook users will probably be familiar with this feature.

3) Compact View for folders - From here, you can collapse all your folders for a more streamlined experience, and pick and choose which ones you would like to have accessible when using this view by clicking on the button.

4) No more visual advertisements - You will still see the pane for Active Search on the right hand side of the product, but these can also be turned on/off through the View menu.

MICROSOFT LATEST PRODUCT

Latest Microsoft Products Driving Hardware Innovation and Platform Opportunity
Bill Gates highlights Windows platform momentum, impact of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008; Craig Mundie discusses future of hardware and software development at WinHEC 2007
LOS ANGELES — May 15, 2007 — Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates kicked off the 16th annual Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) today by highlighting the strong sales momentum and positive customer and partner response to Windows Vista™ in its first 100 days of availability. Gates showcased the tremendous wave of innovation and new technologies now available for businesses and consumers. He also unveiled the name for the next major Microsoft® Windows® platform release: Windows Server® 2008, formerly code-named Windows Server “Longhorn.” In addition, Gates announced new hardware makers and third-party software solutions for the upcoming Windows Home Server.
“A wave of great new hardware products from our partners has played a major role in the strong demand we’ve seen for Windows Vista,” Gates told the WinHEC audience in his keynote address. “Going forward, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will provide a platform for hardware innovations that will deliver more intelligent and compelling computing experiences for consumers and business users, driving increased demand for a wide range of new PCs and new devices.”
Gates was joined by Microsoft Chief Research and Strategy Officer Craig Mundie, who discussed the future of hardware and software development on the Windows platform. Mundie emphasized that for customers to fully benefit from hardware improvements in the years ahead, developers must create applications that take advantage of manycore processors and the increased power and computing resources they provide.
Economic Impact of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 on Industry
Underscoring the opportunities Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 provide to hardware partners, Microsoft released results of a commissioned profile from IDC showing the economic impact the two products are expected to have in the U.S. market. Titled “The Economic Impact of Microsoft’s Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 in the U.S.,”* the profile predicts that for every dollar of revenue in the U.S. Microsoft will earn in 2008 from Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, the technology ecosystem beyond Microsoft will reap approximately $18 in revenues. IDC also predicts that in 2008, this same ecosystem will sell more than $120 billion in products and services revolving around Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Also of note is the predicted 20 percent gain in overall Windows-related employment in 2008 that IDC attributes specifically to Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
“The impact of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will reach far beyond Microsoft,” wrote John Gantz, chief research officer and senior vice president of IDC. “Overall, the advent of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will help local economies grow, improve the labor force, and support the formation of new companies. In addition, the indirect benefits of using newer software will help boost productivity, increase competitiveness, and support local innovation.”
Evolving Customer Demands Create New Partner Opportunities
Gates announced that nearly 40 million Windows Vista licenses have been sold as of 100 days after its January launch, confirming that Windows Vista is the fastest-selling operating system in history. A driving factor in the early success of Windows Vista is the accelerating shift to digital lifestyles and the desire for richer computing experiences, as evidenced by the demand for premium editions of Windows Vista, which have accounted for 78 percent of Windows Vista sales. Windows Vista is the most broadly supported operating system Microsoft has ever released. For instance, there are now more than 10,000 hardware and software products that have passed rigorous testing processes to earn either a Works with Windows Vista logo or a higher-performance Certified for Windows Vista logo, served to products proven to deliver a superior experience with a PC running Windows Vista. Thousands of additional software titles and more than 1.9 million devices are compatible with Windows Vista today.
The Windows platform continues to support the industry’s most innovative and varied set of computing experiences. During Gates’ keynote address, partner technologies leveraging the connection and sharing scenarios made possible by Windows Rally technologies, which enable homes to create a fully functional wireless network capable of sharing content such as streaming high-definition video, were demonstrated. One such product taking advantage of Windows Rally is from Buffalo Technology Inc.
“Buffalo’s customers and resellers have been very enthusiastic about the Wireless–N Nfiniti Dual Band Router, and having the Certified for Windows Vista logo has only augmented that excitement,” said Morikazu Sano, senior vice president of global sales and marketing at Buffalo Technology. “The N Nfiniti Dual Band Router is the first Certified for Windows Vista wireless router available today, which is a testament to our commitment of providing solutions that are up-to-date with current market trends with products that are compatible with Microsoft’s latest operating system.”
A Next-Generation Server Platform for Hardware Innovation
Gates underscored that Windows Server 2008 is a key component to the next wave of hardware innovation, which includes support for virtualization, multicore processors and 64-bit applications. Just three weeks after its release, the new Beta 3 version has been downloaded more than 100,000 times, and Windows Server 2008 development reflects Microsoft’s most extensive customer- and partner-centric feedback program for server development to date. This is evidenced by enhancements to features such as the Server Core installation option, Server Manager, Internet Information Services (IIS 7.0) and inclusion of Windows PowerShell™, he said. Also as part of the keynote address, Gates demonstrated how Windows Server 2008 administrators can spend less time on day-to-day tasks and more time adding value to their businesses with Windows Server 2008 Security and Policy-Enforcement features that work together to provide advanced access, control and protection at the network, application and data layers.
As part of its commitment to the overall Windows platform, Microsoft is working with chip-makers, original equipment manufacturers, independent software vendors and developers to help ensure that the ecosystem necessary to support the general availability of Windows Server 2008 is in place.
Windows Server 2008 builds on the improved reliability, security and manageability of Windows Server 2003 R2 to help alleviate pressures on IT professionals today by adding enhancements to further automate daily management tasks, tighten security, provide a more extensible platform for hosting and Web applications, improve efficiency, and increase network availability. When Microsoft releases Windows Server 2008 to manufacturing later this year, it will include the first widely distributed beta of the new hypervisor-based virtualization technology.
A New Generation of Workplace Phones and Devices
Also at WinHEC, Microsoft and nine industry-leading companies introduced a new generation of devices that connect the workplace phone to e-mail, instant messaging, real-time presence information, conferencing, voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and mobile communications. Today, a new wave of phones and devices are available for use in the public beta program of Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communicator 2007. More information is available at
